Friendship Family Program
Friendship Family Program
Classes, essays and tests are just a part of an educational experience. In fact, some of the most rewarding experiences occur outside of the classroom and library, especially as an international student. One way for this to happen is through the Friendship Family Program, which introduces international students to local members of the community. These community members are volunteers, but are rewarded with their own education of cultures and the satisfaction of making somebody feel more at home in a foreign country. Furthermore, these friendships that develop between the family and the student often last a lifetime, and can help build a bridge between countries and cultures.
JWU Friendship Family Program is very flexible so that we can match the needs of students and families. After we receive your application, we will follow up with you by telephone, and will match you with a student or students as soon as possible.
The following is the description of the two options for the Friendship Family Program. Community Members may choose either or both options. For your reference, the international student demographics are below.
Friendship Families
Friendship Families are families that volunteer their time with Johnson & Wales international students for three to six months. Meetings may include local outings to places such as:Newport, or Plymouth Plantation. In addition, families invite students to their homes for visits, holidays and other celebrations throughout the term. The Friendship Families should help with culture adjustment and respond to students’ observations and questions regarding United States culture. They should also provide a new perspective on culture not otherwise experienced on campus. In return, students may share their own experiences, traditions and customs with his/her host family, thereby fostering a cross cultural exchange. The suggested time commitment is at least once a month throughout the friendship. Participants will be invited to join other participants and the International Center for a celebration at the end of the year.
Holiday Visits
Holiday visits are for those interested in a one time connection with international student(s) for a holiday celebration. Anybody may participate who wants to share their culture and home for holiday(s). The objective is a cross cultural exchange for families who want to share their traditions, and learn from international students about their various cultures. The visit may result in a longer relationship, or it may be a one time experience to exchange culture and traditions.
I have a match - now what do we do together??
Families and students do many things together. Activities range from getting a cup of coffee, visiting Newport, going to a Polo, baseball or soccer game, going on a canoe ride or shopping in Wrentham and having a pot luck dinner. There is no limit to activities except your creativity. Students like to meet families and locals, as well as getting to know the local culture. Families could show students around the Providence area, and should be open to learning new things about the student(s)’ culture. Have fun!
As a part of this program, you will also receive a monthly calendar with activities you can do together.
